ABOUT US

Who we are and what we do

Broadlands SAC (School Advisory Council) is a volunteer parent group that are yearly voted by the school community to represent them. It is open to all parents/caregivers.

Our role has 2 purposes:
  1. improve student achievement and,

  2. enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.

How do we do it?

We work with Broadlands teachers and the school administration to provide recommendations on any matter the council considers appropriate.

We support each other with: open communication and information sharing.

We represent each other on  School improvement process, School Committees, improving equity and mental health.

We are accountable to each other through: Bylaws, consultations/surveys, and meetings minutes and reports

We raise funds, organize events, and plan exciting and engaging activities so that we can help provide much-needed resources and educational enrichment for every student at Broadlands. We are advocates for the school, the students, and our fellow parents.

What SAC spends its money on

All money raised from SAC events is spent completely on Broadlands students. Here’s a taste of what that money was spent on over the last several years:

  • A multi-use asphalt basketball court

  • Computers, laptops, and DASH robots

  • Water bottle refill station

  • Music/drama risers

  • Recess carts with toys and sports equipment

  • Scientist in the School workshops for every single class

  • Drama performances for students by a professional theatre troupe

  • Skating and curling days

  • A week-long JungleSport adventure in the gym

  • A portion of the Outdoor Learning Centre in the Kindergarten play yard

Where the money comes from

Pizza lunches, the fall donation drive, Winterfest, Spring Fair and Dancefest are among the events that help pay for all that.

Bringing our community together

We also organize many events that are simply designed to bring our community together outside of school hours. They raise little to no money but are a lot of fun for kids and parents alike. These include the Welcome Back pizza party and movie nights. We've also partnered with teachers to put on Literacy Night and Math Night.

Why you should come out to meetings

We meet for just an hour and a half, every other month.  At our meetings we brainstorm ideas, plan upcoming events, decide on how to spend the money and are the first to hear and discuss school news from the administration. It’s a great chance to ask questions, be in the know and have your voice heard.

Can't make it every month? That is fine - join us when you can and as often as you can.

When do we meet?

SAC meetings are held at least 4 times during school calendar year

When?   Weeknight evenings from 7-8:30 pm in the school library.

How? We are doing a combination of virtual and in person.

Everyone is welcome and we have access to free babysitting (for in-person meetings) is provided to those who email their request to us in advance at broadlandssac2013(at)gmail.com.
