Congratulations on another successful Dancefest!
Thank you to all the students at Broadlands for your amazing efforts! You brought in roughly $11,500 for the school, and we could not have done it without everyone's help. Every dollar goes towards enriching the student's experience at Broadlands. The amazing success and hard work of our recent Lion King production is an example of what this money supports. For more results visit our Facebook page.

The Lion King Experience
Congratulations to the grade 3, 4 & 5 students and teachers at Broadlands who put together a phenomenal production of the Lion King Experience! Thank you to everyone for all your hard work and to all the parents for your ongoing support. Bravo les amis!

Dance, Dance, Dance again!
DanceFest is happening next week!
It is Broadlands biggest fundraiser of the year. Your help and support for this effort will make an enormous difference to your child's experience at the school.
Where does all this money go?
The money raised helps fund events such as skating and curling days as well as the upcoming Lion King Experience production, which you'll have the opportunity to see next month. Many of our staff is working really hard with all of our Grade 3, 4 and 5 students to put on this amazing production, complete with sets, costumes, and professional sound equipment!
Last year, the money raised went towards paying for events including the week-long Junglesports gym activity and a fully-booked family engagement night. It allowed students to watch multiple dance, drama and music shows as well as participate in Scientists in the School workshops throughout the year. Some of our sports teams were also outfitted with new team jerseys.

Fall Festival gathering for the Broadlands community!
DID YOU SAVE THE DATE??
With the new school year underway and our kids hopefully settling in, we can finally breath a small sigh of relief over crossing that hurdle! What better way to relax, meet our children's old and new friends and (re)connect with other Broadlands families than our Fall Festival?
The October 12 event will be a great evening for our school community: We will have a BBQ and fun (FREE!) activities for the kids!
No time for Halloween shopping? No problem! Bonus - pumpkins and gently used costumes will be on sale!
BBQ - a hamburger or hot dog and a drink = $5
Costumes - $5 per costume
Pumpkins - $2 for pie pumpkins
$5 for carving pumpkins
Bouncy castles, crafts and activities - FREE
COSTUME DONATIONS:
Too many pirate, superhero, princess, animal, astronaut costumes piling up in your house? Are your kids outgrowing their old costumes? Bring them to school with your child!! We are accepting gently used donations until October 11. We’re looking for costumes of ALL SIZES so even small adult costumes are good to donate because some of our older kids will fit into those (um, but nothing too racy please 😉). Contributing to Broadlands
Though events like Pizza lunches, Winterfest, and Dancefest are among the fundraising activities the SAC organizes, we are asking you to please consider making a voluntary contribution towards the 2017-2018 school year in order to ensure that Broadlands SAC can continue to organize events and fund exciting and engaging enrichment activities for every student at Broadlands.
Contributions are voluntary. The suggested amount is $25 per student although any level of contribution is welcomed and appreciated and every dollar makes a difference. The forms will be sent home with your child, but can also be found here.

Pizza Lunches!
Need a break from packing daily lunches? As part of the Broadlands SAC Special Lunches program, pizza lunches are being offered to all students twice a month. Catered by 241 Pizza, your child will receive two large slices of cheese pizza on each pizza lunch day.
Participation in pizza lunch is voluntary. However, to participate, your child must place an order for all 6 pizza dates. Extra pizza will not be available for purchase on pizza lunch days.
Online payment is preferred; however cheques will still be accepted. The forms will be sent home with your child, but can also be found here.

The Facts of Lice ... Broadlands' Prevention Program
Head lice are a concern of many parents of school-aged children. The most common places for children to come into contact with head lice are schools, sleepovers, playgrounds, or sporting events. Infestations can happen easily when children are playing together.
Last year, we introduced a proactive lice check program for all students at Broadlands. Certified professionals from Nitwits Lice Removal Team came to the school and spent approximately five minutes with every student, thoroughly checking for lice. They returned to check any children who were absent on the check day and even checked children who had previously been treated for lice.
The program will continue this year, with three lice checks already scheduled in the fall, winter and spring. The total cost for all three lice checks is $5.00 per student.
To avoid infestations, all students at Broadlands must be checked for lice during these scheduled checks. Please complete and return one form per family by Wednesday, September 20. Click here for the form.
For more information, prevention methods, and treatment options click here.

Welcome back! ... and consider joining Broadlands' council!
We hope you all had a fantastic summer! It will be great to see so many familiar faces again, but we want extend a warm welcome to the new students joining the Broadlands family!
Watch this space for information on the new school year!
In the meantime ....

Everything we accomplished together in 2016-2017
Thank you for helping us make this yet another exciting year! As the school year comes to an end, we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the many great things we supported and accomplished at Broadlands thanks to your support. Click here for all the details on what we were able to accomplish together with your help!
Help your kids make a Summer Leap, not a Summer Slide!
Summer may be just around the corner, but that doesn't meant the learning stops! Kids who read over the summer are more likely to leap ahead when they return to school. But it doesn't have to cost anything either to keep those books coming.
Rainy day? Take your kids to the library and let their imagination run wild!
Going on a family trip? Borrow some books at your local library for that long drive, or down time at the beach or camping!
Looking for fresh books to read before bedtime? Library!
Broadlands has signed up to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a free online reading program that invites children to log their reading minutes all summer. Go to this link for more details.

Coming down to the home stretch ...

The Giving Tree: Saying Thank You!
The Giving Tree recognizes the financial support from Broadlands parents and community members who helped us raise monetary funds for our Outdoor Learning Centre 2016. Merci! On est merveilleux!
TDSB Trustee Ken Lister: Equity Forum May 25th
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The TDSB’s Enhancing Equity Task Force is focused on improving the learning and well-being of each and every student by understanding and mitigating – or removing – the barriers of social and economic inequity.
This collaborative effort between the TDSB and the communities it works with is an opportunity to bring people together, learn from each other and explore what’s working, what isn’t and how to improve it. The Task Force seeks to understand and respond to new insights, challenges and opportunities that will impact the entire Board.
One way we’re doing that is by hosting ward forums that bring together school communities to talk about school-specific strategies that will improve equity for all. These sessions will explore equity, consider what work has already happened in the school to improve equity, and help address the question: what’s keeping us from doing more?
Join the conversation. Share your voice. Please register here:
http://www.tdsb.on.ca/Community/HowtoGetInvolved/EnhancingEquityTaskForce/EquityWardForums.aspx
When and where: Thursday May 25th, Georges Vanier SS, 3000 Don Mills Road 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Food, refreshments, interpreter, and childcare are provided. More information here.
Regards,
Trustee Ken Lister

Jungle Sport Family Fun Night - Update
Thank you to everyone for your interest in attending our Jungle Sport Family Fun Night! We are thrilled that so many of you wanted to join us at this exciting school event. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event and the capacity limits of the climbing equipment, we were only able to accommodate a limited number of climbers.
We were able to add an extra time slot to accommodate three groups of climbers instead of two but we still were not able to offer a spot to everyone who submitted their completed forms. We know that this will disappoint many families but we hope that we can count on your continued support at future events.
If your family received a spot, a note has gone home with your child. Your time slot is on it. If you know you WILL NOT be there, please contact us at broadlandssac2013@gmail.com to let us know as we can then give your spot to another family.
Because of the capacity limits of the climbing equipment, you will only be allowed to climb during your designated time slot. Each time slot ends promptly at the designated time. No exceptions will be made.

Dance, Dance, Dance! Broadlands Dancefest fundraiser
The SAC is excited to announce that on April 12th and 13th, we will be hosting a Dancefest fundraiser at Broadlands. The very popular DJ Trevor has agreed to come back to Broadlands with his interactive show to make this event the best dance party our school has ever seen!
This is our primary fundraising initiative and offers a healthy and active fundraising activity. The funds will be used for computer technology and special events at Broadlands, which will enrich, strengthen and expand our children's school experiences and education.
We are asking the students of Broadlands to get sponsors for this event. Sponsors can donate cash or cheques to be collected by the student. Alternatively, money can be donated online at:
https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/broadlands-dancefest
Stay tuned for further information and more details on exciting fundraising prizes!

You too can try out Junglesport!
SAC is bringing JUNGLESPORT to Broadlands the last week of March for all students!
Experience it for yourself by joining us for a PARENT ENGAGEMENT EVENING Thursday March 30th!
Time: 5:30 or 6:30
The equipment can only accommodate 40 parents per session – so space is very limited. You must pre-register for the event and spots will be available on a first come, first signed up basis. Submit your forms as soon as possible, and no later than Thursday March 23, to be considered for a space. We will confirm your space by sending a note home on Monday March 27th with your child.
There will also be a pizza party social in the library between 5:45 and 7:15 so please join us for dinner before or after your time in the gym!
